Scouting Report: Riverside-Brookfield Shootout
Scott Phillips - The Basketball Report Head Scout
June 8, 2010

TBR had a scout on hand to watch the 2010 Riverside-Brookfield Shootout June 5-6, 2010 in Chicago, IL where he filed the following reports:

Name 'Class year - Pos - Ht/Wt: Scouts Notes TBR Rating: ?

Benet
David Sobolewski '11 – The more we see him, the more we like him. Sobolewski does a lot of little things that don’t immediately stick out, but as a point guard, he uses screens very well and takes good angles on cuts with or without the ball. He’s also an elite level shooter who can knock it down with the best of them. With improved point guard play, he could potentially fit in at a high-major program in need of a shooting guard that can be a secondary ball handler. TBR Rating: MM+

Frank Kaminsky '11 – Kaminsky was shoved around a bit under the hoop against much smaller players and ended up playing most of the offensive side of the game facing towards the basket on the perimeter. He needs to improve his rebounding and post play on both ends, but he is a very talented ball handler and shooter for a big man. TBR Rating: MM+

-----

Bloom
Edward Williams '11 – This lefty guard knocked down shots from the perimeter and benefitted from the drive and kick of point guard Donald Moore. Williams seems to be a pretty reliable spot up shooter from the three-point line. TBR Rating: D-3

Donald Moore '12 – Moore went toe-to-toe with Sobolewski and did the best he could by countering with some impressive offense on his own. Donald is very quick and shifty and uses moves like a jump stop to create space from defenders and score in the paint. He also knocked down a shot or two from the perimeter, although we are not sure how consistent he is from deep. Defensively he struggled a bit on the more physically mature Sobolewski, but with more experience and more strength he is capable of being  a solid on the ball defender. TBR Rating: LM+

LeJavious Johnson '12 – Johnson was the third in a trio of impressive perimeter threats from Bloom. Johnson also shot the ball well from the three-point line but also mixed up his offensive attack by taking some passes off-the-dribble and finishing with the rim or with a floater. He’s got a nice offensive package and could be instant offense.

-----

Curie
Greg Travis '11 – Travis is a power-packed point guard that is still learning to become a true point guard. While capable of barreling into smaller guards and taking them off the dribble, Greg has improved his ability to run an offense and made sound decisions for much of the weekend. He still does a great job getting to the basket and drawing contact (and often finishing) against bigger opponents. His shot still looks a little weird, but it seems to at least have some consistency in terms of release and rotation. He’s a competitor who will not back down from any opponent. A tough and hard-nosed Public League point guard with some skills. TBR Rating: LM

Devin Foster '12 – The younger brother of Detroit guard Donovan Foster, Devin is taller and stronger than his brother but has a penchant for shooting from the perimeter like he does. Devin has a really odd hitch in his long release, but still gets it to fall with some regularity. He’ll need to improve his shot selection and add some moves off the bounce, but he is a nice looking player at the moment for small schools.

Paris Burns '12 – Burns is a dose of instant offense and is a small but fearless guard. Shooting from the outside is a strength, but Paris will also drive it to the hoop and make a move on a big guy before dropping in a layup. He was the key to a very successful sophomore team at Curie last season and he looks to have improved even more since last season. One to watch for small schools and low majors if he continues to grow. TBR Rating: D-2/LM-

-----

Downers South
Jerron Wilbut '12 – Jerron had a very nice weekend playing with his high school team. He was at his best in transition, where his athleticism and handles shined in the open floor. He has the ability to play above the rim, or score from beyond the three-point line and did both over the course of the shootout. He also ran a little bit of point and did an admirable job, although he is definitely more wired to score. TBR Rating: MM

Jamal Millison '12 – Millison took turns switching off guard spots and played well in both of them. He is at his best on the break, where he enjoys getting out in the open floor and making plays or finding teammates. He’ll form a very potent backcourt with Jerron Wilbut during the high school season. TBR Rating: LM+

-----

Evanston
Garrett Jones '11 – Garrett struggled a bit in the game we saw and at times he can run hot and cold. It was partly an adjustment to playing with some new teammates and a new backcourt running mate in Erick Locke, but Jones will surely right the ship in the short term. He is simply too good a player to not score the ball like he usually does. TBR Rating: LM+

James Farr '11 – Farr has continued to impress after a great spring. He is long and skilled and has a good enough jumper to be a threat out to the three-point line. He will also play a bit inside and get some post touches, although at this point he seems more like a former high school post player who would prefer to play the wing. Defensively he still needs to be a weak side shot blocking presence and did so at certain times. He will need to add strength to be a better rebounder as well. TBR Rating: MM

Erick Locke '14 – Locke has burst on to the scene this spring as one of the best incoming freshman in the state. The son of Evanston coach Bobby Locke, Erick is a scorer that looks to get looks from the perimeter. He has a slight hitch in his release, but he can still stroke it and will get very hot at times. He will need to improve his shot selection and his overall guard skills, but he is a very promising young prospect.

-----

Glenbard East
Johnny Hill '11 – Hill was one of the most impressive players in the event. His jumper has improved substantially since the end of the high school season and he is now a threat to score from all over the floor. He can still slash with the best of them and attacks the hoop hard and uses tremendous athleticism and his long arms to finish above the rim. Defensively the arms help him be a versatile threat that can defend bigger or smaller players and his hands are great with deflections and steals. He’s a classic late bloomer and one to watch for all levels of mid-major basketball. TBR Rating: MM/MM+

Zach Miller '11 – Miller is the consummate floor leader and distributor that can also knock down a couple of shots. Like we have said all spring, Miller has a great ability to pass the ball and find the open man using a variety of bounce passes and good angles. He sees the floor very well and can often find a cutter from anywhere on the floor. The question lies with his ability to defend at the next level. TBR Rating: LM

Kevin Priebe '11 – Priebe has good size at 6’5 for the kind of shooting display he put on over the weekend. We didn’t see him do much else, but small colleges should be all over this perimeter threat with size. TBR Rating: D-3

-----

Homewood-Flossmoor
Julian Lewis '11 – There are few that play as hard as Julian Lewis. A longtime favorite of TBR, Lewis will rebound in traffic, attack the hoop hard and defend any position 1-4. Although he is undersized to do those things and is the ideal size for a wing, Lewis is improving his perimeter skill set and his jumper looks much more consistent. Coupled with the athleticism, mentality and intangibles he’s a nice-looking prospect. TBR Rating: MM-

Antonio Bishop '12 – The unheralded 2012 member of Homewood-Flossmoor, Bishop will not be underrated for long. He has a tremendous frame already for a young forward and is a good athlete with a decent enough motor. Bishop also showed a bit of skill in the post with his touches and was a little right-hand dominant but has a lot of potential. TBR Rating: MM

Tim Williams '12 – Williams has the most upside of the H-F group. A strong and lean 6’7, Williams is also improving his skills to go with a power forward’s body. His handles are a little right-hand dominant but they are improving and he can go to his right off the dribble now and finish with authority at the rim. He will take a few too many perimeter jumpers for our liking, but he has a high release with improving consistency. As a rebounder he was solid and nearly impossible for most players in the event to box out. He’s a potential high-major prospect. TBR Rating: MM+/HM-

Delvon Rencher '12 – Rencher is currently making an interesting transition from a forward to a wing position. It seemed like he was a bit confused on where he should play at times and it was hard for us to get a read on what he has improved. He still has a great deal of athleticism and a good body, now comes the part where he figures out which skills he needs to succeed at the next level.

Tyrone Sherman '12 – Sherman has really curtailed his wild streak from a year ago. He is not as reckless with the ball anymore and is becoming more of a point guard that is capable of running an offense. He is still a great shooter from the outside, capable of drilling three-pointers off the catch or the dribble and can often get his shot off with little space and still knock it down. The concern now comes with how small he is and his capability of guarding bigger and stronger guards. TBR Rating: MM

Lamar Wofford-Humphrey '13 – Upside and potential are the key words to describe this prospect. Lamar is the tallest and longest member of Homewood-Flossmoor and also runs the floor very well. He didn’t get many touches because of the other post prospects on the floor, but he was active on the defensive end and showed a lot of promise.

-----

Morgan Park
Wayne Blackshear '11 – Wayne was clearly the best player in the event, as he usually is. He scored the ball from everywhere on the floor and also threw down the best dunk of the event off of an upfake near the free throw line that got his defender in the air. He is so strong that other guards have a near impossible time bodying him up and he is a smart enough scorer to know when and how to utilize mismatches. Defensively he wasn’t matched up against a big offensive threat and didn’t have to do very much. TBR Rating: HM+

Russell Smith '11 – Russell has come down to earth a bit since a tremendous performance at Spiece and ran some point while also playing off the ball. He is still tough as nails and willing to defend anyone the entire length of the floor, but its clear he needs more time on the court as he makes occasional mental lapses. His shot is also inconsistent at times, although he usually has good shot selection and will look to shoot closer to the basket if he does. TBR Rating: D-2

Adrian Jeffries '12 – Jeffries has filled out nicely and has a strong frame for a high school forward. He is a good athlete that can play a little inside and also rebound the ball. He is a city player to keep tabs on in the upcoming season for small schools and low-majors.

Markee Williams '13 – Markee looked great running the point and attacking the basket. He’s an aggressive floor leader that plays with great heart and passion for the game. Markee is undersized but can finish at the rim with either hand with a variety of scoops. He is the type of player who wants the ball with the game on the line. TBR Rating: MM-

Billy Garrett Jr. '13 – Billy has grown and now stands as a tall point guard that can see over the defense, or attack the basket and score. His outside shooting has always been his biggest strength but now he is adding the true dimensions of a complete point guard to his overall game. He is still feeling out his body a little bit and will continue to improve as he matures and fills out. TBR Rating: MM+

Terrence Quinn '13 – The player they call “Speedy” was all over the floor and looked good as a backup guard in this shootout. He is an aggressive defender in traps and does a good job getting deflections and steals. We didn’t see him do much offensively but he was a capable scorer on the sophomore level as a freshman this past season.

Kiree Perkins '14 – Perkins is the next big thing at Morgan Park and he showed some flashes of a bright future. Already blessed with good size and athleticism for his age, Kiree is most comfortable playing in and around 10 feet on the offensive end of the floor. He also did a good job defending some older and more physical players and seems to be quickly earning his stripes with his older teammates.

-----

Morton
Jeff Jarosz '11 – Jarosz is incredibly crafty and always seems to get his hands on the ball. We don’t know what it is about him, but he has a throwback game where he scores on a number of running and driving shots and scoops. He has very quick hands which enable him to get steals in the open floor and also get off quick looks on the offensive end. TBR Rating: D-3

-----

Mount Carmel
Malcolm Hill-Bey '12 – An absolute blur with the ball, now Malcolm needs to slow down a bit and learn how to change speeds and tempos in order to be fully effective. At this point he is more of an undersized two-guard but also has good ball handling and passing ability. He chooses to hunt his own offense too much of the time and can get himself into trouble by getting himself trapped and turning the ball over. He also falls in love with his perimeter jumper when he is quick enough to blow by almost anybody off the dribble. TBR Rating: MM

-----

Proviso East
Tino Vasquez '11 – Tino is going to be a valuable member of any basketball team as an energy guy who will rebound and defend any position. He is not overly skilled, but he gets things done around the basket by being one of the hardest working players on the floor.  TBR Rating: D-3

Keith Carter '12 – Carter seems to have fallen a bit in the eyes of some, and a lot of it has to do with injuries and what seems like a lack of confidence. Before Keith was unafraid of any situation when shooting or passing but now seems more hesitant to pull the trigger. It could be that he is recovering still from the injuries, but he needs to regain his swagger a bit. His shot also looks a bit different, as he puts the ball more behind his head and takes a bit long to release it. Keith is still a sound on-the-ball defender who will use his quick hands and long arms to poke a couple balls free from his man. TBR Rating: MM

Trashaun Carroll '12 – Carroll is struggling this summer and hasn’t grown or improved very much since last year. He also seems like another player struggling to find confidence and has missed numerous opportunities to convert on buckets he usually makes. TBR Rating: D-2/LM

Sterling Brown '13 – Brown was the pleasant surprise of the event. The younger brother of Los Angeles Lakers guard and Proviso East legend Shannon Brown, Sterling is doing his best to carve his own legacy. He is going to play varsity this season and when he does so, might be the best player on Proviso East’s team. He’s already 6’4 with a great knowledge and feel for the game. He isn’t the elite level athlete that his brother is, but Sterling already has a very developed mid-range game and can score at all three levels. He has a very bright future. TBR Rating: HM-

-----

St. Ignatius
Nnanna Egwu '11 – Nnanna played through some nagging injuries, but still got the job done in the post. He has improved his strength considerably since the end of the high school season and isn’t getting pushed off the block anymore. He is also comfortable facing up and shooting a jumper out to about 15 feet. Still owns his area defensively and is great at challenging shots and rebounding. TBR Rating: HM-

-----

St. Joseph
Elliot Clark '11 – Clark was a solid role player for the Chargers, starting with the first unit and contributing in all aspects of the game. He is consistent enough to run the offense through at any point and usually makes the smart play. TBR Rating: D-3

Joe Edwards '11 – Edwards had another solid weekend, doing a good job playing physical and latching on to Wayne Blackshear while also being more aggressive on the offensive end. Joe is becoming more confident with his outside jumper and will also put the ball on the deck and attack the basket. He is a good athlete with good lateral quickness and an ability to play above the rim. TBR Rating: LM

Tom Jenkins '11 – Jenkins once again played well and is a big-time athlete who contributes most of his offense near the basket. He’ll be a nice small school forward because of his athleticism. TBR Rating: D-3

Cameron Harvey '12 – Harvey is improving his stock every week and looks like a good commitment for Wyoming. He can score the ball from everywhere on the floor and has a good jumper with a high release from deep. He is also a good athlete with a strong and wide frame, although he could stand to grow a little bit in order to be a two-guard that scores on bigger players. TBR Rating: MM

Avery Harmon '12 – Harmon came down to size a bit after a solid spring on the grassroots circuit. He had some trouble handling Morgan Park’s press and turned the ball over a bit, but once he got adjusted to the speed and physicality of the game he was fine. He is a deceptive passer that can pass one way and look the other.

A.J. Patty '13 – Patty is developing into a nice forward with size and touch. He played well last month at Spiece and here he knocked down a couple of jumpers from the baseline with a feathery touch. Has the look of a future prospect. TBR Rating: LM/MM

William Gates Jr. '13 – The son of Hoop Dreams star and former Marquette player William Gates, the younger Gates is getting his first varsity experience this summer. He looks to shoot from deep and didn’t do much else and only got limited minutes.

-----

St. Patrick
Royale Ewing '13 – Ewing is a smooth guard that has no trouble getting to the basket and making plays. This is our first chance viewing him since the end of the high school season and he has grown a bit. He sat on the bench a lot in the brief time we saw.

-----

St. Rita
Tony Hicks '12 – Hicks has continually impressed TBR since the high school season and did so again at Riverside-Brookfield. He is a long, athletic and smooth combo guard with an ability to run a bit of point and also score the ball off-the-ball. His ball handling is solid and he has decent vision as well that allows him to find a teammate if he doesn’t attempt to score. As a scorer he is at his best going to the basket and needs to improve his jumper a little bit. TBR Rating: MM-

A.J. Avery '12 – Avery is one of the more underrated prospects in Illinois at the moment. He has great size and a skill set which allows him to play inside or a bit on the perimeter. He is athletic and able to jump for rebounds and put in occasional putbacks. Need to see more of him but overall has the look of a potential mid-major kid. TBR Rating: MM

-----

Thornton
Jay Parker '11 – Parker had a nice bounce back tournament after a mediocre spring with Meanstreets. He seemed more comfortable with Thornton and was running the point and finding open teammates with ease. He hasn’t grown much and still isn’t a consistent shooter. TBR Rating: D-2/LM

Brian Greene '11 – Greene is a big-time athlete but is pretty raw otherwise. There are moments when he has the ball and attacks the rim where you can see his upside but then there are other moments where he makes mistakes and plays too quickly and loses control. He is more of a slasher at this point. TBR Rating: LM

-----

Whitney Young
Sam Thompson '11 – Sam returned to action in Illinois for the first time in this event and is still shaking off an ankle injury. He was still explosive and able to finish above the rim. Sam also is a tremendous defender that specializes as a help defender and blocking shots. He’s also able to handle and pass very well for his size and can contribute as a secondary ball handler. TBR Rating: HM

Luke Hager '11 – Luke is a very good athlete for his size and brings good size and athleticism to the small forward position. He is able to rebound well for the position and instantly push the ball out on the break like a guard. Luke can be a bit streaky with his shot and shoots the ball behind his head. Confidence is a big thing for him to be at his best. TBR Rating: MM

Dominique Bolden '11 – Dominique is a bit unheralded because of the depth and size of Whitney Young, but he does a good job shooting the ball and has a good frame for a guard. I would like to see him get more opportunities, but he has some upside. TBR Rating: D-2

Kwai Pearson '11 – Kwai is a long and athletic combo guard with some ability to run the point. He can attack the rim and also knock down some shots and usually is a sound defender and decision-maker as well. He is also a strong student. TBR Rating: LM+

Jermaine Morgan '12 – Morgan is another guy that needs to improve his skill set in order to maximize his talents. He has a go-to move in the right hook, but he goes to it almost every time and smart defenders will pick up on it after awhile. He is still a good presence on the glass and as a shot blocker. He just needs to add some weight to fight in the post. TBR Rating: MM

Derrick Randolph '12 – Randolph only played a few games with the Dolphins during the shootout but is jet-quick with the ball and has improved his long-range jumper considerably. He plays his hardest all the time and is a true leader by example type who needs to work a bit on communicating with teammates. He also needs to limit turnovers and wild passes a bit, but he is a top prospect in 2012 in Illinois. TBR Rating: MM+

Nate Brooks '12 – Brooks is still a mega-athlete with a big-time vertical but his skills haven’t improved very much since last year. He needs to either gain strength to become a post player, or gain skills to become a wing player. Tweener at the moment. He also is a great student and one to watch for high academic schools. TBR Rating: D-2

Keith Langston '13 – Langston is a developing wing with a sweet stroke that is starting to get more confident putting the ball on the floor. His offensive tools are all there and he is long and fluid and could probably grow a couple more inches. It’s all about upside for Langston. TBR Rating: MM

Lawrence Briggs '13 – Briggs is the latest in a long line of undersized point guards for Whitney Young. He started on the sophomore team as a freshman and is tough despite his tiny size. Shooting is his biggest strength for now, and Briggs is not afraid to pull the trigger from pretty much anywhere on the floor. Ball-handling is also a plus, although Lawrence will over-dribble way too often instead of setting up a shot for teammates. He needs to become more of a point guard and grow a little bit to be a prospect.

Jahlil Okafor '14 – Look out folks, here is the next big thing to come out of Illinois. Okafor is already a big-time post prospect that possesses huge hands, an even bigger frame and the ability to finish around the hoop with either hand. He is already good on the glass and is improving his ball handling ability. He has the look of a great post prospect.
